Female Boxing Reaches Olympics

Boxing was the only olympic sport where women could be just watchers: not anymore. Last week, the International Olympic Committee decided to include the sport modality in the 2012 London Summer Games. That decision will bring full parity to the genres and have answered a demand from athletes and associations. In the olympic version, fighters use more protective gear - as in the picture below, which is not the case in the professional fights.

After the joy, some involved with female boxing complained that only three weight classes will compete in the Olympics: either get skinnier or fatter is the answer to a fighter who does not fit in the allowed ranges. I really did not get it: may it be a question of available time and venues during the London Games?

And in 2016 we are going to have female rugby (does that qualify as female fighting?) in the Games...
